Boko Haram: Damaturu under attack

Boko Haram’s siege in the north of Nigeria continued in its almost daily successions as explosions and gunfire rocked Damaturu, the Yobe State capital on Monday morning. Reports say the town had been surrounded by the insurgents.

Residents told AFP news agency that the attack targeted the police. 
 According to the news agency,

The sound of blasts and heavy weapons being fired woke locals in the Gujba Road area of the Yobe state capital at about 4:45 am (0345 GMT), said Umar Sada, who lives in the area. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“We have left our homes. We are now in the bush. We don’t know what’s going to happen,” said local man Umar Sada, who said a police barracks had been destroyed.</blockquote>

An Air Force jet has arrived Damaturu, and is engaging the Boko Haram fighters.

"We are hearing the sound of the jet fighter hovering the skies amid

 TMZ reported that he rushed to the backstage to get the wound treated and never returned. He however later in the day tweeted that he was fine despite bing bloodied from the fall.

Gunmen kill policeman, one other, in Port Harcourt

Gunmen in the early hours of Sunday shot and killed a policeman and one other person in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. Punch reports that the incident took place at about 7.45am at Amadi-Ama Town.

 An eyewitness said four armed men stormed the area and shot at a policeman and a youth suspected to be a member of a cult group. 
 The youth, simply identified as Gift was reported to have died on the spot while the policeman was said to have died after being rushed to a nearby hospital within the state capital. 
 The police was also reported to have embarked on mass arrest within the area following the killing of their colleague. 
 According to the Punch report,

The wife of one of those arrested by the police, Mrs. Seline Koko, disclosed that security operatives took away her husband while he was ironing his clothes. Pleading with the police to release her husband, Mrs. Koko maintained that her husband knew nothing about the incident at Amadi Town. “I am appealing that the police should release my husband because he does not know anything about what happened. He was ironing some clothes when the police came and arrested him. I have gone to some police stations around the place, but my husband is not there,” she said. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that 25 persons were arrested in connection with the killing of a policeman and a suspected cultist.</blockquote>

David Beckham and son, Brooklyn involved in car crash

Former England captain, David Beckham and his 15-year-old son, Brooklyn were on Saturday involved in a car crash outside Arsenal’s training ground in Hertfordshire, London.

 Reports said the airbags of their Audi R16 deployed successfully and both father and son left unhurt even though the car was badly damaged. 
 BBC reports that police were called to the scene at about 1.29pm. Both Beckhams were left “shaken” after the accident. 
 Brooklyn, had before the crash played for Arsenal’s under-16 team in a match against Brighton and Hove Albion at London Colney. He is on a short-term contract with the club which he joined earlier this month.

11 people feared dead as gunmen go on rampage in Rivers

Gunmen went on a shooting spree at Omoku, headquarters of Ogba Egbema Ndoni local government area of Rivers State, reportedly killing up to 11 people in the area on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

According to a Vanguard report, the masked gunmen shot indiscriminately for several hours on Friday night and fled when men of the Joint Task Force, JTF, engaged them in a  shootout. They however regrouped on Saturday afternoon and resumed attack at the market. The newspaper reported further that:

Sources feared the shooting may not be unconnected with plans by some politicians to hijack the collection of Permanent Voter Cards  which commenced in the area on Friday. Among those killed, sources said, was  a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who was simply identified as Godspower. The Chairman of the local government area, Mr Austin Ayamadu, who condemned the incident, appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring that security men had taken charge of the area. Ayamadu said the gunmen went from one street to the other shooting before security men swung into action.</blockquote>
 The Chairman, in a statement said: “Unknown gunmen invaded Omoku and started by killing an elder of the APC and  some  other people were also killed. The figure I cannot immediately say because of the security situation, but it is more than five”. The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, was however quoted as saying that it was a clash between rival cult groups and that his men were on top of the situation.

Gunmen kidnap Town Union President in Enugu

Unknown gunmen have reportedly kidnapped the President-General of the Nsukka Town Union, Chief Augustine Alumona. His vehicle was discovered recklessly abandoned along the newly constructed Opi-Ugwuogo, Nike road, by a police officer who found the phone number of the chief’s brother.

A source quoted by Daily Post said Chief Alumona was on his way to the home of a PDP governorship aspirant and managing director of Peace Mass Transit, Evang. Samuel Maduka Onyishi for a meeting.

A medical doctor, and the Secretary General of Oha Nsukka Assembly, Doctor Ikechukwu Obayi while reacting to the ugly incident said the abduction of Chief Alumona was shocking and unbelievable. </blockquote>

“The wife called me and broke the news of the abduction of her husband along Opi/Ugwuogo Nike road.</blockquote>

“Going by the peaceful nature of Chief Alumona in conducting the affairs of Nsukka Community, he should be the least person anyone would think of ambushing or kidnapping”, he said. </blockquote>

Obayi stated that the matter had been reported to the Enugu State police command for quick rescue of their community leader. </blockquote>

When contacted for comment, the Area commander Nigeria Police Command Nsukka ACP Musa Haladu confirmed the incident but, however, said it was within the jurisdiction of the Enugu State command, explaining that the police would soon unravel the circumstance surrounding the kidnap of Chief Alumona.</blockquote>
According to the report, the kidnappers are yet to reach the family or demanded any ransom.

Iran condemns Kano mosque bombing

Iran has condemned, in strong terms, Friday’s bombing of the Central mosque in Kano, where more than 120 people have been confirmed dead.

 According to Irans’ Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, Marziyeh Afkham, deplores the terrorist attacks on the Muslim worshippers in Kano Mosque, regretting that Nigeria was now going through a sensitive era in history as a result of the terrorism and radicalism currently holding sway. 
 Police said two suicide bombers and some gunmen set off three bombs and opened fire on worshippers at mosque attached to the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who was out of the country as at the time of the attack. Apart from the dead, over 270 worshippers were injured.   
According to FARS news agency,

She further reiterated the need for combat against the heinous phenomena of terrorism and radicalism. Afkham described unity of the Nigerian nation and their vigilance against any religious and tribal sectarian moves as crucially important. Blasts from the coordinated assault rang out as scores of people packed into the ancient building's courtyard for afternoon prayers. The mosque is next to the palace of the emir of Kano, the second highest Islamic authority in Africa's most populous country and a vocal critic of Boko Haram Takfiri militants. The emir, former central bank governor Lamido Sanusi, was not present. Boko Haram Takfiri terrorists have attacked mosques that do not follow its radical ideology in a bloody near six-year campaign that has also targeted churches, schools, police stations, military bases and government buildings.</blockquote>
President Goodluck Jonathan said in statement that he would "not leave any stone unturned until all agents of terror undermining the right of every citizen to life and dignity are tracked down and brought to justice".

Jonathan had attended a Yoruba summit organized by some Yoruba 
traditional leaders at the Oduduwa Hall of the university. The Ooni of 
Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade and other prominent obas and Yourua leaders 
were in attendance. 
 In an interview with Punch newspapers on Saturday, Ibikunle said that students of the university insisted on discussing with Jonathan on the increment of the fees charged by the school and the President obliged. 
 He said,

 “We read some reports that the President was stoned, booed and harassed when he came to our campus. This is not correct. 
 “Security personnel initially prevented us from seeing the president but we insisted that we wanted to discuss with him and we were allowed to see him. 
 “We told him that the increment was too high, and gave him a petition concerning the exorbitant fees and he assured us that he would act on it fast. 
 “I asked Mr. President to come down from the car and address us and he came down. He is our president, we did not harass him.”</blockquote>
 According to Ibikunle, President Jonathan was even hailed by the students and those present when his helicopter was taking off at the university’s sports centre.

 The leadership of the Students’ Union is appreciative of the listening character of the President as well as the efforts of individuals who facilitated the meeting with the President. Mr President, the reversal of increased fees should also be extended to all Federal Universities and pump funds into education in the interest of the country. 
 However, we condemn the attitude of some individuals who portrayed themselves as elements of frustration and cheap political tools. Through this medium, we warn them to stay away from OAU campus as they are not unknown to the leadership of the union. We maintain our ground as Intellectual Fighters for Emancipation and not as uncoordinated confusionists and anarchists.

 According to him, a mob killed four of the attackers while the rest escaped. 
 At least 64 people were killed and 126 injured when the two bombs exploded during prayers at a mosque attached to the palace of the Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II (Sanusi Lamido Sanusi). 
 The attack comes a week after he issued a call to arms against Boko Haram. 
 An attempt had earlier been made in the morning at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State. 
 According to an AFP report,

In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, civilian vigilantes said they had discovered a suspected remote-controlled device planted in the Gamboru Market area of the city.</blockquote>

 PUNCH reports that the explosion which occurred at about 2.30am on Thursday at Ukpebo Street, off Textile Mill Road, Benin, Edo State, “left a 31-year-old mother of three, Mrs. Loveth Ode, her two year-old son, Wisdom, and her relative, Alfred Omonefe, with varying degrees of burns”. 
 According to the report,

Alfred, 15, however, died en route to the Central Hospital, Benin. Others were said to be receiving treatment at the hospital. Loveth’s husband, Mr. Sunday Ode, 35, told our correspondent that he was away at work when he got a call that his wife, son and nephew had been rushed to the accident and emergency ward of the hospital following the explosion. He said that the incident occurred when his wife attempted to refill a lit lantern in the room with the kerosene which she bought from a roadside seller.</blockquote>
 The paper quotes Sunday, a farmer from Ughele North in Delta State, as explaining that the fire caused by the blast did not affect other rooms in the compound, but destroyed some of his valuable property. 
 He said: “I received a call this morning (Thursday) that my room on Ukpebo Street caught fire last night as my wife tried to refill the lantern. 
 “I was shocked and rushed to the hospital where they were taken to. But my sister’s son who was staying with me died on the way to the hospital. 
 “I am appealing to the government to assist me and my family because I don’t have anything now.”

NAFDAC workers call off strike

Health workers at the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have called off their nationwide strike warning that they would resume the strike if the Federal Govenent fails to fulfill its own part of the agreement reached within the next 10 days.

 Speaking at a rally at the agency’s office in Lagos, the Chairman, Medical Health Workers Union , Federal  Area Council, Comrade Stephen Ibe, said the union decided to suspend the 14-days old strike after a fruitful deliberation with government officials at the Salary and Wages Commission; the Ministry of Labour and Productivity and NAFDAC’s board of directors.

 Toyota's action follows a recall by rival Honda Motor Co for the same problem two weeks ago after revelations of a fifth death, in Malaysia, linked to Takata's air bag inflator. More than 16 million vehicles have been recalled worldwide since 2008 over Takata's air bag inflators, which can explode with too much force and spray metal fragments into the car. 
 Toyota is recalling some Vitz subcompacts, called Yaris in some markets, and RAV4 crossover models made between December 2002 and March 2004. About 40,000 are in Japan, 6,000 in Europe and the rest in other markets outside North America. Toyota said it was not aware of any injury or death related to the recall. 
 Separately, Toyota's small-car subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Co also issued a recall, in Japan, of 27,571 Mira minivehicles produced between December 2002 and May 2003 for the same reason - its first recall involving Takata inflators. 
 About 2.6 million vehicles have been recalled in Japan so far for Takata's air bag inflators, a transport ministry official said. 
 Takata-related recalls are almost certain to balloon after U.S. safety regulators on Wednesday ordered the company to expand a regional recall of driver-side air bags to cover the entire United States, not just hot and humid areas where the air bag inflators are thought to become more volatile. 
 Takata has so far resisted expanding the recall, saying that could divert replacement parts away from the high-humidity regions that need them most.

BUSTED: Man impersonates Dangote to kidnap beauty queen

A 23-year-old man, Patrick Ifada, who posed as billionaire businessman, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, on Facebook, in order to kidnap the 20-year-old daughter of a Special Adviser to the Kwara State Governor on Political Affairs, has been arrested by men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command.

 Parading the suspect on Wednesday, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, said the suspect was a member of a five-man kidnapping gang who operated a fake Facebook account in the name of Dangote. 
 He said the suspect had via Facebook, proposed to the victim, Miss Sa-adat Usman Bibire, who is a beauty queen that he would like to make her a brand ambassador for Dangote Noodles, an offer she hurriedly accepted. 
 He said further:

“Thereafter, the victim proceeded to Warri in Delta State from Lagos to meet with the fake Aliko Dangote and was subsequently kidnapped and a N20 million ransom was immediately demanded from the father of the victim. 
 “The father was directed to transfer the ransom to a bank account in Malaysia before his daughter would be released. 
 “Upon receipt of the complaint from the victim’s father, I directed the officer in charge of SARS, Superintendent of Police (SP) Abba Kyari, to launch a massive hunt for the kidnappers and to track the whereabouts of the victim.” 
 Kyari was said to have worked in conjunction with telecom operators to track the suspect’s phone numbers. 
 Aderanti spoke further: “Having collated the necessary data, Kyari immediately deployed two decoy teams of police detectives to Warri, Delta State, and after seven days of meticulous follow ups, the victim was successfully rescued at a house on the outskirts of Ozoro town in Isoko South Local Government Area of the state. 
 “It was during the raid of the criminal hideout, that one of the kidnappers, Patrick Ifada, 23, was arrested by the police. He was the gang’s surveillance officer within the hideout.”</blockquote>
 THISDAY Live however reports that Ifada, in his statement, denied knowledge of the plan to kidnap the victim, alleging that the plot was hatched by Marcus Omojuwa, his bosom friend, who also provided the Malaysian account used for the transaction. Omojowa is however on the run.

 “Marcus got the girl’s profile online after she was declared the winner of a beauty pageant. While chatting her up on Facebook, he told the girl that he is Alhaji Aliko Dangote and that he would like to make her one of the brand ambassadors of the company’s noodle. 
 “The girl bought the idea. One day, she flew into Delta through Warri Airport, from where we directed her to come to Ozoro. She eventually discovered that she had been taken for a ride when she met Marcus. 
 “It was there and then that Marcus told her to ask her father to pay the sum of N20 million into the Malaysian account. She stayed with us for two weeks during which we fed her with Indomie noodles, rice and at times we bought her food from a nearby eatery. 
 “During her stay, Marcus warned us not be violent with the girl. After a week and money was not forthcoming, Marcus reduced the amount to N15 million and later to N500,000.” 
 Narrating how he was arrested by the police, the suspect added, “I had just finished eating and I went outside to wash my hands when I saw some vehicles heading towards our hostel and before I knew what was going on, the police swooped down on me, while others took to their heels.”</blockquote>

Making the disclosure to newsmen in Enugu on Thursday, the company’s legal adviser, Henry Okoro, said the workers disappeared from the project sites more than one week ago without giving any strike notice. 
 His words:

“As I talk to you, we can’t say that the workers are on strike because there was no notice to that effect. The law provides for a mandatory 14 days notice, but in this case, there was no such thing.</blockquote>

 “The only thing we saw was that the leader of the workers’ union mobilized other persons and they made the workers to abscond from their duty posts. 
 “Ever since this happened, several invitations have been sent to them so that we can have a dialogue, but they refused to show up. Even the DPO of Railway Police Division, and the Area Commander have invited them for dialogue, but they have remained inaccessible”.</blockquote>
 Okoro, said the company would have to recruit new workers to meet up with the deadline in line with contract terms. He said:

 “As a good corporate body, we owe the public some explanation to avoid rumour mongering, because there have been speculations; so we want to set the records straight.</blockquote>

Below is a Wednesday Editorial by Daily Sun Newspaper which takes a closer
look at the situation in Nigeria. It makes an interesting read:

Nigeria, last week, emerged 4th on the 2013 Global Terrorism Index. In
plain language, Nigeria was the 4th worst affected country with regard to
incidents of terrorism, last year. In the global study by the London-based
Institute for Economics and Peace, it was little surprise that Nigeria ranked
behind Afghanistan and Pakistan, that came first and second respectively, while
Iraq, which had 2,492 terrorist attacks that killed 6,300 people, came third.
Syria, now in the throes of a devastating civil war, was ranked 15th 
after Nigeria.

It was equally understandable that the number of people killed in terrorism
attacks rose 60 per cent in 2013 to over 18,000.  That figure is expected
to go even higher in 2014 due to the obvious escalation of terrorism in the
Middle East and Nigeria. The Institute stated that there were 303 terrorist
attacks in Nigeria in 2013 with 1,826 fatalities and 457 injured, “figures
bound to be eclipsed judging by the ferocity of 2014 attacks by Boko Haram.”

The economic cost of terrorism in Nigeria was horrendous: $28.48
billion.  And, it thus followed that Nigeria sank to the bottom rungs of
the Global Peace Index, ranking 151 out of 162 nations.

Boko Haram is named next to the notorious Islamic State in Iraq and Syria
(ISIS) followed by the Afghan Taliban and the international al Qaeda-affiliated
networks in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The sobering reality that Nigeria is now acknowledged worldwide as a country
beleaguered by terrorism should serve as a wake-up call on all Nigerians to
unite and work to free the country of this odious toga.

The Institute confirmed what Nigerians already know that “…the four groups
responsible for most of the deaths all have their roots in fundamentalist
Islam.”  It also acknowledged how intractable the problem was when it
observed that “they (terrorist groups) are particularly angry about the spread
of Western education.  That makes any attempt at the kind of social
mobilizing you need to stop them particularly difficult – it can just
antagonize them more.”

Boko Haram’s repeated blood-curdling attacks on schools, the brutal murder
of hundreds of students; the abduction of over 200 students from the Government
Girls Secondary School, Chibok, underscore and validate the institute’s
observation.

It is so sad that Nigeria has joined the league of the severely troubled
countries of the world.  One of the first thoughts about Nigeria in
international circles now is the terrorism raging in the North-East of the
country.  This is a major setback for the country. Assets and
infrastructure which took decades to build now go up in flames in minutes and
rebuilding them would probably cost double the amount initially spent on
putting them up. At a time other countries are pushing every lever to develop
their economies and thereby improve the wellbeing of their citizens. Nigeria is
at the mercy of a murderous gang intent on destroying everything of value
within its reach and dragging it back to the 7th century.

With rankings such as this one from the Institute for Economics and Peace,
the signals to foreign investors are obvious.  The warnings to foreign
tourists are also negative.  Travel advisory may be issued by some
countries to their citizens to steer clear of Nigerian.  This is a
backward march which should distress every Nigerian.

It is disheartening being bracketed with countries that have been engaged in
civil wars like Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Somalia and the like.

And getting Nigeria out of those brackets is the challenge for Nigeria’s
security forces.  We do not believe that Boko Haram is too difficult for
Nigeria’s Armed Forces to subdue.

It is obvious the forces are currently contending with niggling internal
problems of discipline, training, command, and equipment, which have manifested
on many occasions to the embarrassment of the country.

But, we are convinced that the Nigerian military will sooner than later get
its acts together and finally fulfill its constitutional obligation, which is
to guarantee the security of lives and property and the territorial integrity
of the country.

“Clean Cooking”: FG to buy cooking stoves, “wonder bags” for rural women

 According to the government, the project is part of the National Clean Cooking Scheme. What is “Clean Cooking” all about? 
 Briefing newsmen after the FEC meeting, Supervising Minister of Information, Dr. Nurudeen Muhammed, said:

“The National Clean Cooking Scheme is an aggressive drive to engender clean cooking culture amongst the poor rural women, to reduce and possibly eliminate cooking with solid fossil which is detrimental to health. 
 “The scheme is expected to provide 20 million clean stoves over a five-year period at the rate of four million stoves per annum, which will be distributed free of charge. 
 “It will also reduce incessant felling of trees, which exposes the country to ecological problems. “Furthermore, additional benefit to Nigeria in switching over to this technology by the rural households is the carbon credits arising from the registration by the UNFCCC. The country stands to gain 50 per cent subsidy of the price through the generated carbon credits.”</blockquote>
 Minister of Environment, Mrs. Lawrecia Mallam, said that those who would benefit from the stoves include the about two million female farmers that are currently procuring fertilisers through e-wallet and another two million women already registered by a non-governmental organisation. 
 It was however learnt that the money was approved for the procurement of 750,000 units of clean cooking stoves and 18,000 wonder bags. They are expected to be delivered by Messrs Integra Renewable Energy Services Limited within 12 weeks. 
 “Wonder bag”, a non-electric slow cooker, was invented by a South African eco-entrepreneur, Sarah Collins. A power cut in  her country six years ago inspired her to come up with the idea of surrounding the pan with cushions.

 Businessweek reports Sandy Douglas, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Customer Officer of Coca-Cola North America, as saying at Morgan Stanley’s Global Consumer Conference last week:

 “It’s basically the premiumisation of milk… We’ll charge twice as much for it as the milk we’re used to buying in a jug” </blockquote>

On Tuesday in that country, passengers in the Arctic had to come out of an airplane to help push it to the runway. Chai! 
 
Okay, before you start to think that it was a “push and start” plane, this is what actually happened. 
 
The light aircraft with 74 oil workers and seven crew members was due to fly from the town of Ingarka to Krasnoyarsk when the plane’s chassis breaks literally got frozen to the ground. 
 
It was -52 C outside and so the desperate passengers had to do what they could to get out of there. A phone video caught them pushing the plane by leaning on both wings. 
 
The incident was funny to many but not to Russian authorities, who have launched an investigation into a possible breach of safety regulations. 
 
The country’s Tass news agency quoted Oksana Gorbunova, senior adviser to the West Siberian transportation prosecutor as saying:

 “It would be funny if it didn’t pose a horrendous threat. People could have damaged the aircraft skin and the flaps” </blockquote>
 
He said the passengers were asked to leave the plane when it got stuck. When a tractor began towing the airliner, some of the passengers left a bus and tried to help move it.

 He spoke at a book Launch in honour of the pioneer chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, (ICPC) Mustapha Akanbi‎, in Abuja. Obasanjo, the Chairman of the occasion, said the president should stop encouraging ‘verbal violence which may not physically hurt but has ways of degenerating into physical violence’. 
 This is how <a href="http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/171903-breaking-obasanjo-bombs-jonathan-says-presidents-evil-actions-destroying-nigerian-democracy.html">Premium Times</a> further reported Obasanjo’s recent attack on Jonathan:

 “Management of democracy without resorting to brute force and dictatorial tendencies must be cultivated,” the former President said.</blockquote>

 The former president also spoke at length on the President’s handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, ‎corruption, the economy and youth unemployment. 
 On insecurity, Mr. Obasanjo said Boko Haram is not out to “frustrate anyone’s political efforts” and lamented that it took Mr. Jonathan the years to ‎fully understand the menace. 
 On corruption, Mr. Obasanjo said, “when the head is rotten, the whole body is useless” 
 On the economy, he said Nigeria would continue to sink deeper and that what Nigerians are told about the state of the economy “is not truly what the economy is”. 
 “The economy is in doldrums, if not in reverse,” he said.</blockquote>
 The latest verbal attack comes a week after the former President rated Jonathan’s administration low, saying: “I rate this current administration below average,”

Arsene Wenger replies critics

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has been under fire following his teams lackluster form especially after it lost at home to Manchester United last Saturday.  A Gunners shareholder, Alisher Usmanov, whose Red & White Holdings Group has just over a 30 per cent stake in Arsenal’s parent company in an interview with CNBC, questioned the direction of the north London club. 
 He had said that Wenger’s errors were not properly reviewed and that this failure to look into the Frenchman’s mistakes was preventing he club from becoming one of Europe’s leading sides. 
 But Wenger, speaking to reporters ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmound at the Emirates shrugged off the criticism saying he was not bothered:

 “I am long enough in the game to know that when you play well, but lose the game, you get flooded with critics, however, if you play a very bad game, but you win it, everyone says how great you are. 
 “It is our job to take a distance with that and see what was right and what was wrong. The rest is part of the game.” 
  “What is important is how close we are together inside the club and how much we can respond to people who question our quality,” 
 “I personally feel that there is a very strong bond inside the team and the club, and that this team will have a very strong season.

Security agents shoot at UNIJOS students, 11 injured

Security agents on Tuesday reportedly shot at protesting students of the University of Jos, Plateau State, injuring 11 of them. The students were publicly protesting against an alleged increment in school fees.

Military operatives had stormed the school premises as the protest entered its second day, shootng and arresting some of the students. 
 Daily Trust quotes the Student Union’s Public Relations Officer, Longgun Dakwon, as saying:

“I narrowly escaped, the military came into our classes and shot some of us while some were arrested and now the school authority is asking us to vacate our hostel when some of us have only N30”.</blockquote>
 The STF spokesperson, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, however debunked the claim that his men were responsible, saying that his men were also injured after miscreants hijacked the protest. 
 He said:

“There were other security agents there and there was a shooting in which four students were injured. However the shooting was not carried out by STF. On the first day of the protest, the students poured water on us and stoned us but we exercise restraint. Today there was need for reinforcements so other security agents had to join.” 
  “The school property is under threat because they have allowed miscreants to hijack the protest, four of our men were injured during the protest yet we exercised restrain, their protest should be within the bounds of law.”</blockquote>

 The University Registrar, Mr. Jilli Dandam, later released a statement on behalf of the school management, asking students to vacate their hostels. 
 “In order to avoid further escalation of the situation, the management met this morning decided that the school be closed down until further notice. Students are therefore directed to vacate their hostels”.

Punch newspaper quotes Senior Project Manager of the Humanist Association for Peace and Social Tolerance Advancement as saying on Tuesday that the boy, Usen Okon, an orphan, was in care of his paternal aunt, identified simply as Ekaeyen, at Etebi community in the Esit Eket Local Government Area of the state. 
 Ojedokun, according to the newspaper, said that a few days ago, “Okon was aroused from sleep by Ekaeyen who took him to her husband and asked him to confess to being a wizard”.

 “She actually threw Okon into Imo River thinking that the boy would drown. The boy came out of the water alive and went to their home, only to be told that her auntie had relocated,” Ojedokun said. 
 The acting Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Mr. Iboro Victor, said he was not aware of the incident. 
 “The incident is not to my knowledge right now,” he said.</blockquote>
 The boy is being taken care of by the Humanist Association for Peace and Social Tolerance Advancement and its partner, Child’s Rights and Rehabilitation Network.

Ebola workers dump corpses on the street over unpaid bonuses

In protest of their unpaid allowances and bonuses, burial workers in Sierra Leone are dumping bodies in the streets.

Aljazeera quotes residents as saying that up to 15 corpses were abandoned in the eastern town of Kenema, three of them at a hospital entrance in order to stop people from entering. According to the head of the district Ebola Response Team, Abdul Wahab Wan, the bodies included those of two babies. 
 According to the news network,

A spokesman for the striking workers, who asked not to be identified, said they had not been paid their weekly hazard allowance for seven weeks.</blockquote>

 He added that the central government had paid the money to the district health management team. 
 “Somebody somewhere needs to be investigated (to find out) where these monies have been going,” he told Reuters news agency.</blockquote>
 Two weeks ago, workers walked off the job at a clinic in Bo in Sierra Leone, deepening the crisis in a country that has been worst hit among the West African countries affected.
