Armed robbers reportedly attacked a bullion van loaded with cash at Elemoso village along Ondo–Akure road in Ondo East local government area of the state, making away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The attack on the bullion van and the escort vehicle was said to have occurred at about 4:50pm.
Eyewitnesses said the robbers shot at the policemen and the van’s escorts who were all caught off guard. The policemen and the driver of the van reportedly escaped during the shootout.
Bullets, in the seven minutes operation however hit two innocent persons - a middle aged man, who was coming from Ondo town and a school proprietor in the area who was said to be returning in his car from a mechanic workshop in Ondo town.
They were said to have been rushed to the general hospital, where they were receiving treatment.
A Dailypost report said: “Police Commissioner, Isaac Eke, described the attack as shocking, stressing that his men had launched a manhunt to arrest the robbers.
Eke, however, said the command suspected conspiracy in the attack, noting that official bookings of security was not made at the police Operations Department before the assignment was carried out.
The CP vowed that his men would soon arrest and bring the hoodlums to book”.
