The Speaker of the Ekiti
State House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, has been impeached by seven members
of the house who are all PDP members.
Omirin was impeached on
Thursday in the same manner in which the same seven lawmakers sat on Monday to
approve the commissioner nominees and local government caretaker committees
sent to the House by Governor Ayodele Fayose.
The lawmakers elected
Dele Olugbemi as the new speaker. Olugbemi was also appointed as the Protem
Speaker on Monday.
However, Omirin has reacted, saying that he remains speaker. Dailypost
quotes Wale Olujobi, Special Adviser on Media to the Speaker as saying: “just
like on Monday, they were shielded by policemen in a convoy of several
cars bearing registration numbers of Government House vehicles. They
didn’t allow reporters in. They brought just one reporter into the
chamber while members of NUJ in the state were not informed. By the time
journalists heard of the sitting and raced to the Assembly, they had
already concluded their assignment.
Olujobi further disclosed that the sacked Speaker, Omirin has, however declared that he is still the Speaker and that members of the APC will resume duties at the House next Monday to take over the leadership of the House".
