The officers, who were currently receiving treatment at a hospital, had gone to make an arrest at Oregbeni quarters, Ikpoba-Okha local government area in the city when they got into trouble. They had been invited by a landlady in the area to arrest a tenant who she had given a quit notice.
Reports said the tenant insisted on taking her bath before going to the police station but the officers turned down the request and the situation soon degenerated into an argument which snowballed into a fracas as other residents in the area joined the tenant to beat up the officers and strip them naked.
The landlady, simply identified as Mrs. Okebuse, was quoted as saying: “When the police came to make arrest, they started fighting the police. I ran for my live and hid at the other compound”.
The report quoted an eyewitness who said: “The landlady is in the habit of harassing and intimidating her tenants with police. The woman was taking her bath and Police refused to allow the woman take her bath but they refused.”
Police Commissioner, Foluso Adebanjo, who confirmed the incident, expressed disappointment over the attack and stressed that the police would not take it lightly.
According to him, the attackers would be made to face the full wrath of the law and that suspects arrested have already been charged to court.
