A naked woman was found on the rooftop of All saints Fellowship Church in Kubwa, Abuja early Monday morning and she was almost lynched by a mob who accused her of being a witch. Some believed she fell while “flying” in the night.

The woman, Ope Kubona, according to a Punch report, was a well known bean cake seller in the neighbourhood. She was saved by the police who arrived the scene promptly.

The DPO of the Kubwa police station, was quoted by the newspaper as saying: “We rescued the woman from the All Saint’s Fellowship Church, where we found her naked on the rooftop. I learnt she has psychiatric problems, but the spectators believed she was a witch and wanted to attack her, so we had to bring her to the station and place her under protective custody.”

It was learnt that at the Police station, the woman, who described herself as a “prayer warrior,” went out of control, shouting at her children and the policemen, and attempting to attack a pregnant woman, who tried to take her picture with a smart phone. She subsequently refused to respond to questions thrown to her.

One of her children, Elizabeth, 21, said her mother had been acting strangely for about three months. She said her mother refused to be taken to their Okitipupa home town in Ondo state and refused to leave the house.

The newspaper quoted her as saying: “It was around 4am that I noticed that she was not in the room, but I didn’t know where to search for her because it was dark. But in the morning, one of our neighbours saw her on the roof of the church and came to tell us that our mother was on the church roof. The police later came and brought her down, “she said.

The timely intervention of the police prevented what would have been the murder of an innocent woman who had simply gone berserk.
