The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has given Morocco until November 8 to decide whether it would host the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January as scheduled.
CAF issued the ultimate today after a meeting with the Moroccan football federation. CAF insisted that there would not be a postponement of the tournament as requested by Morocco.
Morocco had requested that the January 17-February 8 date for the tournament be postponed till a later date citing fears that event which would attract supporters from all over Africa could spread the Ebola virus in the country.
The Ebola virus which is still ravaging West Africa has killed almost 5000 people in the region.
In the words of CAF media director Junior Binyam, there would be no postponement. According to him, “any change of dates would be to the detriment of the CAF calendar, which must follow FIFA’s international calendar”.
He stated that the systems already put in place by Morocco was “more than able to cope with the limited flow” of supporters during the football event.
CAF has approached about several other countries to consider the possibility of hosting should Morocco eventually decline.
Algeria, Egypt, South Africa and Sudan declined while Ghana and Nigeria have not publicly responded.
