A 26 year-old Mechanic, Ekene Ndupue has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 48-year-old housewife in the bush. He was sentenced on Tuesday by a Delta State High Court sitting in Asaba.
The court was told that on March 21, 2012, at a bush at Okwe, close to the Asaba Immigration Office, Ekene had unlawful carnal knowledge of the married woman (name withheld) after hitting her with a weapon in the waist.
Witnesses said the victim was returning from her farm before the accused waylaid her. A passerby said he heard the shout of the woman screaming for help and then raised an alarm that attracted people to the scene. The rapist was caught red handed and pants down in the act.
Although Ekene was said to have admitted to the crime during a confessional statement to the police, he later retracted during trial. But the court, in delivering its verdict, held that an incontrovertible evidence before it proved that the accused truly committed the offence.
