Boko Haram last week seized the town of Mubi in Adamawa State and this week renamed it “Madinatul Islam” meaning “City of Islam”.

The sect has reportedly also renamed Gwoza in Borno State which it captured in July and declared an Islamic caliphate.

Residents who recently fled told AFP that Gwoza is now known as “Darul Hikma” meaning “House of Wisdom”.

It is believed that the insurgent are in control of more than 24 towns and villages in north east Nigeria and reports have it that they are advancing towards Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

It was learnt that the insurgents are now forcing people in both towns to use the new names. They had earlier assured those remaining in the town of their safety as long as they live according to the tenets of Islam.

Witnesses said all the churches in Mubi had been burnt down and that the Islamists were patrolling the streets regularly without any resistance from Nigeria’s security forces.
