A six-year-old girl has been found dead after she was strangled and dumped near a garbage heap in Quetta, capital of Baluchistan province in Pakistan last Wednesday.
The deceased, Sahar Batool, was from the minority Hazara ethnic group, which have borne the brunt of the wave of sectarian violence that have been sweeping through the province in recent years. The Hazaras are mostly Shiite Muslims and are reportedly always attacked by the dominant Sunni Muslim extremists.
Police believe that the bruises found on Sahar’s body suggested that there was a rape attempt on her.
AFP quotes Quetta city police chief Abdur Razzak Cheema as saying: “There were a lot of bruises on the girl’s body that shows that attempts were made to rape her”
“We have no enmity with any one,” the girl’s mother Bakhtawar Bibi told AFP.
“On the day it happened Sahar went to throw out the rubbish close to the house but did not come back, I went out in search of her, but could not find her.”
A neighbour told Bibi her daughter was at the dump.
With tears rolling down her cheeks, Bibi told the news agency: “She was already dead, with blood from her mouth and nose while her all body bore bruises,”
Her father, Ghulam Sakhi, demanded the “beast” who killed his daughter be brought to justice, saying:“Tiny Sahar insisted I give her a ride on my motorbike in the morning before work — I didn’t realise this would be the last time I ever saw her”.
