48 students killed as bomb explodes in Secondary School in Yobe

A bomb exploded at the Government Science School, Potiskum, Yobe State on Monday killing about 48 students and laving 79 seriously injured.

The explosion reportedly occurred at about 7.45am as the students were queuing up for their morning assembly.


AP quotes a morgue attendant as saying that 48 bodies were brought to the hospital and all appeared to be between the ages of 11 and 20 years old. 

According to The Telegraph Hospital workers said the scale of the injuries was so bad that some of the injured were likely to need amputations.

It is suspected that the bomber appeared hid the explosives in a type of rucksack or school bag used by students.

The Islamic terrorist sect, Boko Haram is believed to be behind the attack though the sect has not claimed responsibility for it.

Punch reports Ibrahim Ahmed, as telling newsmen on the telephone that “We heard a loud sound and since then, the area was condoned off but ambulances have been going into the school to pick corpses and take the injured to the hospital. Potiskum has been in pandemonium since 7.45am as a result of the attack on the school.

“I can tell you all schools in the town have been closed now as parents have gone to pick their children. There is wailing everywhere especially around the school where the incident happened.”

The Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Markus Danladi, confirmed the incident and said he was on his way to the scene of the incident and promised to give details later.
