A commercial bus conveying 13 Nigerian girls, aged between 15 and 21, who were allegedly about to be trafficked to Gabon was intercepted by police in Abia State, Punch reports. Two of the suspected traffickers were also arrested in the bus.
According to the report, the bus with number plate, AYB349AE, was heading for Oron, Akwa Ibom State, from where the girls would be taken across the border.
The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ogbonna Godfrey, while confirming the arrests which were made on the morning of Friday, October 31, said the girls and the suspects had been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service.
His words: “Yes, the incident happened. The police have handed the rescued girls and the two suspects over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation. The service is the one handling the matter now.”
