The Koton Karfe Prison in Lokoja, Kogi state has been bombed by gunmen who used dynamites. At least 50 inmates were freed in the raid.
According to the Force public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, the attack occurred on Sunday night and “up to 50 inmates escaped.
In 2012, Boko Haram insurgents attacked the same prison, releasing about 119 inmates, some of whom were their members.
It is still unclear if Sunday’s attack was carried out by Boko Haram but it will not be hastily ruled out if the recent threat of the Abubakar Shekau, the sect leader is anything to go.
In a video released on Friday, Shekau threatened to extend the reach of his sect’s attack on Nigerian installations. Bauchi and Gombe have been bombed since then.
