2014 Batch C not scrapped, corps members to print call up letters online - NYSC

The management of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC)  has said that rumours making  the rounds that Batch C of the service had been scrapped was false, sayin g that the 2014 Batch orientation would commence November 4, 2014.<br />

It also announced that effective from November 2014, call up letters would be printed on line which means prospective corps members would not need to travel to their schools to collect their letters.<br />

A notice on their website reads: "This is to inform all prospective corps members that with effect from the 2014 Batch 'C' orientation, all prospective corps members will register on-line and also print their call-up letters on-line.There will be no need for them to travel to their respective schools to collect call-up letters before reporting at the orientation camp. Operational details of this will be made known soon.<br />

Batch B corps members have also been posted to various states across the country and the Orientation course starts August 5 and ends on August, 26, 2014.<br />

Landlady's children cut off tenant's scrotum

A 35-year-old man, Yinka Offehin, has had his scrotum cut off by his landlady’s children who allegedly attacked him in the middle of the night.<br />

PUNCH reports that he is presently battling with his life in a private hospital in Lagos. <br />
Identifying the attackers as Solomon and Damilola, children of their landlady, Offehin’s wife who was with him at the time of the incident, said “On Thursday morning, around 3am, while we were sleeping, we heard loud bangs on our door. We initially thought they were armed robbers because the house beside ours had recently been robbed.<br />
<br />
“When they entered, we saw they were children of our landlady. They began destroying our electronics and other property.<br />
<br />
“There were two of them. One held a knife in his hand. They took N8000. They descended on my husband and he also fought back. In that confusion, my husband shouted and we saw that one of the attackers had cut Yinka’s scrotum. I can’t say what they used to cut off my husband’s scrotum.”<br />
She said her husband managed to hold on to one of the assailants till dawn while the other fled.<br />
According to her, her husband could not be admitted at a general hospital because of the ongoing doctors’ strike, but was eventually taken to a private hospital in the area.<br />
<br />
According to the report, the victim’s problem with the landlady started when “he had a misunderstanding with his landlady and was asked to vacate his apartment”.<br />
<br />
Speaking on his hospital bed, he said: “I was asked to leave the house immediately, but after the intervention of the traditional ruler of the community, I was asked to leave by the end of August. But that decision did not go down well with the children of my landlady and they continued to make trouble with me”.<br />
<br />
Confirming the incident as PUNCH put it, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said: “It was around 3am, while the victim was sleeping in his room,that one Solomon Olowogbemi and Damilola Olayeye, the children of his landlady, came in and started fighting with him.<br />
“In the process, they inflicted injury on him with an unknown object. The skin of his scrotum was partly cut off, thereby exposing one of his testicles. The two suspects have been arrested and detained and the victim taken to a hospital.”<br />

·         Transmission among humans is almost exclusively among caregiver family members or health care workers tending to the VERY ill.<br />
<br />
·         The virus is easily killed by contact with soap, bleach, sunlight, or drying.  A washing machine will kill the virus in clothing saturated with infected body fluids.<br />

·         A person can incubate the virus without symptoms for 2-21 days, the average being five to eight days before becoming ill.  THE PERSON IS NOT CONTAGIOUS until they are acutely ill.<br />
<br />
·         Only when ill, does the viral load express itself first in the blood and then in other bodily fluids (to include vomit, faeces, urine, breast milk, semen and sweat).<br />
<br />
·         There are documented cases from Kikwit, Democratic Republic of Congo of an Ebola outbreak in a village that had the custom of children never touching an ill adult.  Children living for days in small one room huts with parents who died from Ebola did not become infected.<br />

·         You cannot contract Ebola by handling money, buying local bread or swimming in a pool.<br />

Her relatives said she was killed outside her hut near the southern Somali
 town of Hosingow by Al Shabab gunmen.<br />

Reports said the militants had ordered her to put on a veil, and then killed her 
after returning to find out that she was not wearing one.<br />

According to the BBC, an Al Shabab spokesperson however denied the group's involvement in thekilling claiming that the group does not fully control the area where the woman lived.<br />
<br />
Al Shabab, which controls southern and central Somalia, 
imposes strict rules of behaviour, including Islamic dress codes for men and 
women.

Two persons were killed in the incident and at least seven others were injured,<br />

“A female teenager blew herself up at about 2:30 p.m. and she was targeting the students of Kano State Polytechnic,” he said.<br />

Two people tested for Ebola virus in Britain, Hong Kong, Britain on high alert

The Ebola virus fear has spread beyond Africa. A report from China says that a woman is being treated for 'Ebola-like' symptoms at the Queen Elizabeth's Hospital in Hong Kong after recently returning from a trip to Africa. According to a China Daily report, she has been quarantined and a test is being carried out to establish if it was the case of the killer disease.<br />

In the same vein Doctors say they are paying extra scrutiny to patients arriving from Africa with ‘feverish’ symptoms after a man was tested for the deadly Ebola virus in Birmingham.<br />

The Mail Online reported that a man was taken to hospital in the city after complaining of fever while on a flight from West Africa. Reports say he had been travelling from Nigeria via Paris, France when he became sick on Monday. After a series of tests, he was cleared free of the virus, but fears remained that the disease, which had already  killed more than to 670 in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, could spread to the UK.<br />

Another 20-year-old man in Charing Cross Hospital, London gave health authorities a scare when he presented similar symptoms to the virus, but Ebola was quickly ruled out.<br />

UK’s foreign secretary, Philip Hammond in an interview with the BBC said that the British government was viewing the outbreak “very seriously”. He however confirmed that no Briton had been affected. The father of Juventus striker, Carlos Tevez, Segundo Tevez, was reportedly kidnapped yesterday and released 8 hours later after the Tevez flew to the country. has been kidnapped. He was  abducted from a car in Moron, a suburb of Buenos Aires, the country’s capital, early Tuesday morning.<br />

<br />The kidnappers, reports say, made a ransom demand of £1 million after two phone calls.The first call demanded a lower sum in ransom but the second call came hours later to demand the higher ransom of 1 million. Security forces rescue wife of Cameroon’s vice PM from Boko Haram

Security forces in Cameroun have rescued the wife of the country’s Vice 
Prime Minister, Amadou Ali, who was abducted on Sunday by members of the

The woman and her maid were kidnapped from their home in Cameroun’s 
northern town of Kolofata while the vice PM managed to escape the 
assailants to a neighbouring town according to Reuters report. A local 
religious leader, named Seini Lamine, was also abducted from the same

The 16-year-old weightlifter who won a gold medal in the 53kg category was immediately subjected to a preliminary drug test which officials said came out positive.<br />

The athlete’s A samples were said to contain both amilioride and hydrochlorothiazide, which are both prohibited as diuretics and masking agents.<br />

Officials have however said that it would be too hasty to conclude without a second test ( B sample test) on the athlete.<br />
<br />
Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive, Mike Hooper, said: “We shouldn’t make assumptions at this juncture, but if she is found to be guilty she will be disqualified and stripped of her medal. This sets out a strong message that doping cheats will be caught.”<br />
<br />
If found guilty, the athlete would be stripped of  her title and the gold medal would go to Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea, who had won silver.<br />
<br />
Hooper also said: “We are talking about the A sample. The athlete has requested a B sample and that will come through tomorrow (Wednesday)”.

Ebola virus: 59 Nigerians who had contact with Liberian shortly before he died

As health officials continue to assess how badly Nigeria has been compromised by the highly contagious Ebola virus following its detection in Liberian, Patrick Sawyer who died last week in Lagos,  it has been disclosed that Nigeria's Ambassador to Liberia, Chigozie Obi-Nnadozie and 58 other people had contact with Sawyer shortly before he died.<br />

At a news conference on Monday July 28, at the Lagos State Government 
Secretariat in Alausa, Lagos, the State Commissioner for 
Health, Dr. Jide Idris disclosed that 59 people had contact with the 
late Sawyer, which included Obi-Nnadozie.<br />

He said:“So far, a total of 59 contacts have been registered consisting 44 
hospital contacts (38 healthcare workers and six laboratory staff) and 
15 Airport contacts, comprising 3 ECOWAS staff-driver, Liaison, and 
Protocol officer, Nigerian Ambassador to Monrovia, two nursing staff and
 five Airport passenger handlers.<br />
<br />

“As of the time of this report, 20 contacts had been physically 
screened of which 50% are type 1 contact and 50% had had type 2 contact.
 Airline manifest has not been provided by the airline at the time of 
this report and therefore the precise number of passenger contacts is 
yet to be ascertained, especially as two flights were involved 
(Monrovia-Lome and Lome-Lagos),” <br />
<br />

He added that an 
isolation ward had been designated by the Lagos State Ministry of Health
 at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba for case management, adding 
that the designation of three other health facilities was underway.<br />

“A total of 100 Personal Protective Equipment, PPE, were procured by 
the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC and the Federal Ministry of

“Adhering strictly to WHO guidelines, the body of the deceased 
patient was decontaminated using 10% sodium hypochlorite and cremated, 
with the permission of the government of Liberia. A cremation urn has 
been prepared for dispatch to the family. The vehicle that conveyed the 
remains was also fully decontaminated,” he said.<br />
<br />

According to Idris, government could categorically state that as of 
today only one case of imported Ebola and one death had been recorded in
 Lagos, saying that no Nigerian had been infected, but that all contacts
 were being actively followed.<br />

“We call on all Nigerians to be calm and not panic and do hereby 
assure them that both the State and Federal Governments are up in arms 
to ensure that the virus did not escape and that no Nigeria is infected

On the 40-year old Liberian vidtim, Idris said he arrived at the 
Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos from Monrovia via Lome on 
Asky Airline Flight No KP50, on his way to Calabar for the 8th ECOWAS 
Retreat of Heads of Offices meeting, as a senior ECOWAS official in 
Liberia.<br />

He stated that his plane was reported to have had a brief stop in 
Accra and Lome, and the aircraft was changed at Lome, explaining that he
 was also reported to have fallen ill while on board and remained very 
ill on arrival at the airport in Lagos as he was then assisted by 
various airport and ECOWAS protocol staff to a private hospital named 
First Consultant Medical Centre, Obalende, in Lagos.<br />

“An initial diagnosis of suspected Viral Haemorrhagic fever was made.
 He was admitted and investigations were carried and supportive 
treatment was commenced. The private hospital immediately notified the 
State Ministry of Health who also notified the Federal Ministry of 
Health. The patient however died at about 6.50am on the 25th July 2014,”
