Boko Haram
has claimed responsibility for the explosion that rocked a fuel depot in Apapa,
Lagos on June 25, 2014.
AFP
reports that the leader of the terrorist sect, Abubakar Shekau, released a new
video where he said that the sect actually carried out twin attacks as on that
same day, a bomb went off at Emab Plaza in Abuja and killed scores of people.
Shekau’s
new claim comes as a shock as the government had on the event of the Lagos
explosion claimed that it was an industrial accident at a cooking gas storage
tank.
Below is a
screengrab taken today, July 13, 2014 from the 16 minutes video released by Boko
Haram and obtained by AFP. It shows the leader of the extremist group, Abubakar
Shekau in the centre, flanked by at least 10 gunmen in front of two armoured
personnel carriers and two pickup trucks.
Shekau, in the video, also voiced
support for the extremist Sunni Islamic State (IS) militant group, which has
taken over large swathes of Iraq and Syria.
“May Allah protect you” he said,
listing IS chief, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Al-Qaeda head Ayman al-Zawahiri,
Taliban leader Mullah Omar and several others.
He also mocked the social media and the
BringBackOurGirls, campaign, reciting the Bring Back Our Girls slogan.
“Bring Back Our Girls… bring back
our army,” he mocked.
Shekau also said his loyalists
carried out twin car bombings in May in the central city of Jos and a June
attack at a public health college in the northern city of Kano.
“We were the ones who detonated the bomb in
filthy Abuja,” he said, referring to a June 25 attack on a popular shopping
centre in the heart of the capital that killed at least 22 people.A bomb went
off in Lagos. I ordered (the bomber) who went and detonated it. You said it was
a fire incident. Well, if you hide it from people you can’t hide it from Allah”.
AFP reports that Shekau, in boasting
about the Lagos attack, erroneously referred to Adams Oshiomole as the Governor
of Lagos State.
The report went ahead to state that
the error is consistent for Shekau, who has regularly appears out-of-touch and
unhinged in his messages. He has previously threatened ex-British prime minister
Margaret Thatcher months after her death and the deceased pope John Paul II.
