The National Youth Service Corp service year should be made to last for 20 months instead of the statutory 12 months. This was the call of the Niger State Governor, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu in Minna yesterday, August 20.

He spoke while receiving the House of Representatives Committee on the NYSC led by its chairman, Alhaji Mudashiru Akinlabi.

Governor Aliyu condemned calls for the scrapping of the NYSC scheme saying that the scheme was promoting nation building.

Daily Trust reports that he called for a review of the NYSC Act to facilitate entrepreneurial training of corps members and urged the federal government to improve on the welfare of serving corp members.

According to him, Niger State recently opened a register for fresh graduates where over 26,000 were registered but he regretted that only 6000 have been employed by the state civil service.

His words: “In order to reduce the number of unemployed graduates in the state, government has completed arrangements to introduce the Voluntary Teaching Scheme where graduates will be engaged and paid a certain amount of money until they get employed into the mainstream civil service”.
