A lecturer in the Department of Engineering at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Mr Reuben Ikwu, was on Sunday, shot by unknown gunmen in a case of mistaken identity, Nigerian Tribune reports.
According to a neighbour to the businessman, the gunmen had trailed the businessman’s driver, who was returning from an errand, to the house. Immediately they got into the house, they shot at Ikwu who had come to visit the businessman who was his friend. But unknown to the shooters, policemen were attached to the businessman. The policemen then returned fire and shot two of the gunmen dead while the third, severely wounded, escaped with the SUV driven by the driver.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Uche Ezeh, said investigations revealed that the gunmen were kidnappers, as some criminals in police custody identified one of the dead gang members as their leader.
