Ondo state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko on has formally declared his intention to dump his party, Labour Party (LP) to join the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), quelling months of speculation.
Governor Mimiko has since 2006 sustained the party as its only governor and national leader.
Reports have it that he has already informed members of his cabinet and close political associates in a series of meetings which took place on Friday at the Government House Akure.
Former Minister of Aviation and PDP Chieftain, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has also gone on the social media to welcome Mimiko to the umbrella party. He wrote on his twitter page: “Glad to see that my friend Governor Segun Mimiko has left the Labour Party and returned to the PDP. Welcome back.”
Mimiko’s defection to the PDP did not come as a surprise as he had been a vocal supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2015 elections, having also worked for the President’s victory in 2011.
He is the second high profile politician to port to the ruling party within a week. Last Saturday, Nuhu Ribadu defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP.
