Firing squad awaits soldiers found to have conspired with members of Boko Haram in the North-East zone of the country. This was the hint dropped yesterday by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Kenneth Minimah.

The statement comes immediately after a group of soldiers numbering about 40 yesterday in Borno refused to fight Boko Haram militants until they receive better equipment. Fighters from the extremist Islamist group have been reported to be far better equipped than the Nigerian army soldiers sent to fight them.

The Chief of Army Staff, who spoke at the 82 Division, Enugu on his familiarisation tour of Nigerian Army formations, said: “Of course, the issue of saboteurs, which we experienced in the North-East, where soldiers found it necessary to conspire, connive or collaborate with the terrorist elements, we are taking charge of that and very soon, we will identify them and they will go through a field court martial and executed in the theatre.

“It is an offence against our campaign to rid Nigeria of insurgence and terrorist elements. You must avoid being caught in the web because it is field court martial now, no more administrative court martial. You will be brought, tried there and summarily dealt with.

“It is a volunteer army. If you are tired, simply put in your paper and go away. Don’t find fault in the army, don’t come and ridicule the army”.

He said that the army was procuring additional ammunition and platforms to prosecute the war against the terrorists in the North-East. “They will soon arrive and when they do, I can bet you, that we will end that thing very soon,” he said.

Minimah also warned wives of soldiers in all the military formations in the country to desist from any form of protest, saying they had no right to protest because they were not enlisted into the army.

He warned that if such repeated itself, “all those wives will leave the barracks the same day, adding: “They are not enlisted soldiers they are wives of soldiers and not a trade union.”
