The Lagos State government has appealed for volunteers to help fight the outbreak of the dreaded Ebola virus in the state, admitting that there was a shortage of personnel.

The state commissioner for health, Jide Idris said on Saturday:"We have a shortage of personnel. I won't lie about that. And that is why we are asking for volunteers.

This shortage of personnel is no doubt worsened by the refusal of doctors in the public sector to call off their strike which began July 1, 2014.

Lagos, with a population estimated to be over 20 million has recorded has recorded nine confirmed cases of Ebola and two deaths.

Idris said the state government was offering incentives to all medical and paramedical volunteers, including life insurance.

As part of plans to curtail the disease President Goodluck Jonathan approved the immediate release of N1.9 billion to fund measures against the spread of the virus among which include setting up additional isolation centres , screening at the borders, tracing people exposed to the virus, and boosting public awareness.
