The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) recently announced that it has suspended the orientation course for prospective corps members who make up the 2014 Batch B Stream II, deployed to Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Jigawa, Yobe and Borno States.
It has however added that the suspension was due to the federal government’s directive that all schools currently on vacation should remain closed to avert the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease. It added that it was not primarily due to the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease, as widely reported in some media.
In the release issued, it added “For the purpose of putting the record straight, management of the NYSC took a decision in July 2014 to shift the venues of orientation course for seven states; namely, Bauchi Gombe, Jigawa, Borno, Yobe Adamawa and Kano, to other states due to security challenges and the fears of parents whose wards are to be mobilised. Therefore the orientation course in these seven states and that of Osun as well as additional corps members for Lagos State was planned to hold from 1st to 22nd September, 2014 under Stream II of the 2014 Batch ‘B’”
The Director General of the NYSC, Brig Gen Johnson Olawumi who made the initial suspension announcement in Kubwa Orientation Camp in the Federal Capital Territory assured the affected corps members that they would not suffer unduly as the NYSC would ensure that they were not cheated in any way by staying longer than necessary at home.
