Balogun Yomade Yewande, a 26-year-old graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, is struggling to stay alive. She is lying critically ill at Lagos State General Hospital, Gbagada, where she is undergoing dialysis.

The greater problem is that doctors have said that her only hope of living is to have a kidney transplant but her mother alone cannot afford the N9million naira required for the operation.

The Sociology and Anthropology graduate had lost her father in a motor accident on March 20, 1999 and only has a mother who had had only struggled to put her through school, with the hope of reaping the fruits of her labour. But the life of the daughter she depends on now hangs in the balance.

Her friends and family have gone on various platforms, including the social media, to solicit for financial help but have only been able to get about a quarter of what is required and as the search for money lingers, she tends towards losing her life if the operation is not done fast.

Narrating how it all started, the poor mother, Mrs Adebimpe Balogun, said: “It started in 2006 with swollen legs and pains. Then we went to Gbagada and she was treated, but in 2012 she started exhibiting the symptoms again and we went back to the hospital. We then went to Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) and then Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LUTH), but we were later transferred to Gbagada Hospital due to the strike”

In the words of the consultant neprhologist in charge of her case, Dr O.J. Babafemi, “After a thorough clinical evaluation, Yomade was diagnosed as having secondary hypertension from renal artery stenosis, complicated by hypertensive retinopathy. She was treated with antihypertensives and her condition improved.

“But a month later, she developed renal function impairment, warranting salvage dialysis of five sessions”.

Mrs Balogun is now appealing to the general public and well meaning individuals and organizations to come to help save her daughter’s life. She said the cost of the kidney transplant according to St Nicholas Hospital is about N8million to N9 million.
