The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dropped its case of money laundering against former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.

The case came up on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos but the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that when the case was called, EFCC’s counsel, Mr. Festus Keyamo, through a letter delivered by Mr Vitalis Ahaotu, informed the court that they were closing the case for which Fani-Kayode had been standing trial since December 2008 on an amended 40-count charge bodering on money laundering while he was Minister of Aviation.

The former minister was alleged to have done business with funds exceeding N500, 000 without going through a financial institution. He was also alleged to have accepted cash payments of about N100 million.

The defence counsel, Mr Wale Akoni (SAN), who did not object to the letter, however told the court that he was filing a no-case submission to the charges against his client.

The presiding Judge, Justice Rita-Ofili Ajumogobia gave the defence 21 days to file their application. He also ordered the prosecution to respond within seven days of receiving the process.

The case was adjourned till October. 28 for adoption of final written addresses.
