The States of Washington and Colorado in the United States of America have legalized the sale of recreational marijuana but SkyNews USA reports that the first man to buy the product has landed in trouble.

Customers queuing up to buy marijuana

The man, Michael Kelly Boyer, was fired by his employers after news coverage showed him at a marijuana shop buying the product.

News reports revealed that a client of his company logged a complaint to Boyer’s boss, when he saw him (Boyer) on a TV programme on the opening of the marijuana stores.

According to Boyer, after the complaint, his boss asked him to take a drug test which came positive.

When the sales first became legal across Washington, Boyer was said to be the first customer at Green Leaf, a store that sells marijuana.

Both states, in 2012 had voted to legalise marijuana for adults over 21, and to create a licenced system to regulate the production, selling and taxing of the marijuana.

SkyNews reports that sales began in Colorado on January 1, resulting in roughly $2m (£1.2m) in marijuana taxes in the first month.
