Al Makura’s impeachment protests: Anti-riot police take over
Nassarawa streets
Following the pockets of demonstrations in some parts of
Nasarawa State on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, stemming from the imminent impeachment
of the State Governor, Umaru Al Makura,-hundreds of anti-riot policemen and
other security operatives have been deployed to strategic positions to maintain
peace in the state.
Youths had carried out demonstrations at the Orange Market
at Mararaba, Keffi, Akwanga and other parts of Lafia on Wednesday, protesting
what they described as unjust and selfish attempt by members of Peoples
Democratic Party, (PDP) to remove the governor from office.
Police spokesperson in the state, ASP Numan Ismaila, while
confirming the protests assured that the situation was fully under control. He
also disclosed that security agents were now patrolling the state.
Members of the State House of Assembly are hell-bent on
seing the impeachment process through but Governor Al-Makura has reportedly
travelled to Abuja to seek President Goodluck Jonathan’s intervention over his
impeachment.
