It seemed a great weekend to have fun. So, popular Ghanaian musician, Castro (real name: Theophilus Tagoe), might have decided to take his girlfriend, Janet Bandu, on a boat cruise in Aqua Safari Beach on the Volta Lake in Ghana. And to thicken the adventure, they were in company of close friends among whom, was Black Stars of Ghana striker, Asamoah Gyan, who was a regular visitor to the beach.
Castro and his girl went jet skiing until tragedy struck. Bandu
reportedly fell off the back of the Jet Ski Castro was riding, and to make matters
worse, she was believed not to have worn a life jacket. Eye witnesses said that
Castro immediately jumped into the water to save his girl only to end up
drowning with her. He was said to have also taken off his own life jacket in the process.
In an interview published by Entertainment
website, Viasat,Castro's manager, DJ Amess recounted: "When they (Castro and Bandu) took off, the bystanders were calling for
them to return so that the girl would put on her life jacket. Castro was
already wearing his. After they were a few miles away, they saw the girl jump from the boat into the river,"
A Local news
website in the country, Vibe Ghana reported one of the friends who were with
the pair as saying:"All of us, including Asamoah Gyan dived in to try and
save Janet Bandu and Castro. We all tried to help, but we couldn't. We were very
far away from them."
DJ Amess has however said that Bandu was not Castro's girlfriend as widely believed.
He asked the media to stop reporting
that his artiste was dead saying that they were simply missing since
their bodies had not been found inspite of ongoing search by Marine
Police. Although it is feared that they may not be found soon as the
Marine Police may not have adequate facilities to conduct that kind of
search. The outfit's men are trained mainly in rescue operations.
Unconfirmed reports however said a yet to be identified body was discovered by a
local fisherman.
Until his death, Castro, whose style of music was known as Hiplife
(Combination of Hip hop and High life), was famous for his hit track
“sikletele”. Gyan recently featured in one of his songs.
Castro hails from Takoradi, Ghana
