Chelsea Clinton, only daughter of former US President and ex-secretary of State, Bill and Hillary Clinton has given birth to her first child, a daughter that has been named Charlotte. She was born on Friday.

The baby’s birth was announced on twitter early Saturday morning by Chelsea Clinton, who said she and husband, Marc Mezvinsky, an investment banker, are "full of love, awe and gratitude as we celebrate the birth of our daughter, Charlotte Clinton-Mezvinsky."

The baby arrives as Hillary Clinton deliberates on whether to contest for President in 2016, an ambition she forfeited when she lost to Barack Obama at the Democrats Primaries in 2008.

She has said she didn't want to make any decisions about another campaign until the baby's arrival, pointing to her interest in enjoying becoming a grandmother for the first time. If she decides to run for president, her campaign would coincide with the baby's first two years.

According to AP, during an event with former President George W. Bush in September, Bill Clinton's cell phone rang on stage and he joked that only two people had the number "and they are related to me," musing that he hoped he wasn't becoming "a premature grandfather."

On Tuesday, Chelsea, 34, appeared on CNN with her growing baby bump as she revealed she and her husband had decided not to find out the gender of their first child until birth.

She told CNN’s Fared Zakaria: “There are so few mysteries in life…any answer is a happy one. So my husband and I decided that we would enjoy this mystery for the nine-plus months that we're granted, and we are eager to find out what God will have given us”.

“Charlotte” means “freedom”. The name Charlotte dates back to the 1700s, and has long been a favorite among royals and political dynasties.

Chelsea Clinton grew up in the public eye as a teenager in the White House, later graduating from Stanford and Columbia universities. She worked in finance in New York and in public health, earning a doctorate from Oxford University.

She serves as vice chair of her family's foundation, which was renamed the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, and helps direct the organization's humanitarian and philanthropic efforts around the globe. She recently resigned from NBC News, where she served as a special correspondent.

She and her husband were friends as teenagers in Washington and they got married in 2010. Mezvinsky is a hedge fund manager and the son of former Reps. Majorie Margolies of Pennsylvania and Edward Mezvinsky of Iowa, longtime friends of the Clintons.
