Indications emerged last night that leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau may have been killed. Photographs of Shekau’s “dead body” was released to the public yesterday. Sources in Cameroon military source reportedly said Shekau was killed following an aerial bombardment of his hideout inside Nigeria but it is clear that those pictures emerged from the September 17 operation by Nigerian forces in Konduga, Borno State.
But while not denying their suspicion that he may truly be dead, military sources in Nigeria, described him as “the man who had been mimicking Late Abubakar Shekau in recent videos”
A source said: “It is getting more certain that the terrorists’ Commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014.”
Another high ranking military source insisted that the resemblance is too striking to be a coincidence.
“They cited his facial marks, beards and teeth apart from the recovery by the Nigerian troops of some of the Armoured Vehicles and Hilux jeeps that had featured in previous videos of the prime suspect.
“The officers assured that the Defence Headquarters will soon address the nation after full investigation of their latest discovery.
A huge cloud of disbelief still hangs around the death owing to past confusions created by the military last year when Shekau was said to have been killed only for him to resurface in a video this year. Many still believe that the current Shekau is simply an imposter of the former Shekau.
Below is a Vanguard report with respect to Shekau’s “initial death” . It was done August 2013.
The leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, may have died a traumatic death. That was the picture security forces painted at the weekend. From the vast forests of Sambisa, Borno State, where he was reportedly shot and sustained injuries in June during a raid on his hideout by military forces, he was said to have been taken to Mali for treatment by the Boko Haram top hierarchy.
In Mali, Sunday Vanguard learnt that Shekau’s situation soon grew worse.
After consultations, the leadership of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, which in Arabic means, “People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad”, decided to move their boss to Cameroun. It was in Cameroun that the situation got out of hand.
“There, all known medical support that could be provided within acceptable underground limits was mustered. But that was where he gave up the ghost”, one of the security sources said.
The source added that a recent video recording allegedly released by the sect showing Shekau calling the bluff of the US, Britain and France and claiming that nobody could stop the group was a smokescreen to paint the picture that he was still alive and in control.
In any case, the death or rumoured death plus the heavy loss and casualty suffered last week while trying o take Konduga, has now probably scattered the camp of the terrorists with some of them now surrendering to Nigerian forces.
In a tweet on Sunday, the Defence Headquarters, DHQ, said five members of the Boko Haram on Saturday surrendered their weapons to soldiers.
The military said the insurgents surrendered because they could not
endure the massive onslaught by troops. It said the insurgents also
pleaded for mercy.
Graphic pictures that emerged after the Septemeber 17 Konduga raid include this photo believed to be Shekau's. The question now is: who performed the Konduga operation, Nigerian Forces or Cameroonian forces? How come the Cameroonians are the ones showing us the pictures?
