A diploma student of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has reportedly been arrested after being caught with two improvised explosive devices (IEDS) at the institution’s male hostel.
Some students had alerted the operatives of Peace on Campus Initiative (PCI) about a bag containing the IEDs which were in custody of the suspect.
The anti-bomb squad of the Akwa Ibom state police command arrived and defused the bombs after operatives of PCI reportedly trailed the suspect to his hostel. The police team also conducted a search round the hostel.
Confirming the incident in Uyo on Monday, the police spokesperson in the state, Etim Dickson, told journalists that the explosives were home-made.
He said the IEDs were likely produced by science students of the university and added that investigations had commenced on the matter.
He assured the students on campus and parents not to entertain any fear about possible breakdown of law and order in the university community.
He said, “The incident has been properly taken care of. We urge students and employees of the institution to go about their normal businesses.”
He added that the police would get to the roots of the matter while, urging students and parents not to entertain any fear about possible breakdown of law and order in the university community.
