The beginning of the new month of October has in store, a string of holidays for Nigerians as the Independence Day and Eid-el-Kabir celebrations approach. Apart from October 1 being statutory national holiday to celebrate Nigeria’s 54th year of independence, Monday and Tuesday, October 6 and 7, 2014 have also been declared public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Kabir Celebration.

Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, who made the declaration in a statement on Friday on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, congratulated Muslims and wished all Nigerians a rewarding and happy Eid-El-Kabir celebration.

Moro urged Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace and unity across the country. He also enjoined Nigerians to support and co-operate with President Goodluck Jonathan, in his sustained efforts to building a peaceful, united and virile nation.

In the meantime, the Federal Government will on Friday kick-started activities marking Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration with Muslim prayer at the National Mosque, Abuja.

The Muslim prayer will be followed by inter-denomination Christian prayer at the National Christian Centre on Sunday while President Jonathan will on Monday give out national honors at the International Conference Centre as part of activities marking the anniversary.

The minister stated that the President will give a national broadcast at 7.00am on October 1, while change of guards ceremony will take place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, at 9.00am.

The Independent Anniversary Dinner will take place at the State House Banquet Hall at 7.00pm on same day.
