In a desperate bid to stop the on-going umbrella revolution
(Pro-democracy protests) in Hong Kong, the Chinese state media is currently
under-reporting the protests. It has simply stated that an illegal gathering
spun out of control and was being curtailed by police. It has additionally
blocked internet users and blocked photo-sharing site, Instagram.
But stunning images have been leaked. Huffington Post
reports that “an alternate narrative has seeped into the mainland through
cellphone instant messaging services. Users have posted video clips and photos
from Hong Kong streets, as well as articles on the unrest sent as photo images
— not text — so they can circumvent censorship that involves searching text
messages for key phrases”.
Protesters are also reported to have turned to FireChat, a
P2P chat app that allows users to exchange messages even when there is no
mobile phone coverage or Internet access.
