The United States has expressed doubts over reports that Boko Haram leader, “Abubakar Shekau” has been killed as claimed by the Nigerian military.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters had on Wednesday confirmed that the the original Abubakar Shekau was dead and that Bashir Mohammed, a lookalike, who had been impersonating him in videos was killed recently during a clash with troops in Konduga, Borno State.

A senior US State Department official who spoke to reporters on Thursday said: “The Nigerians have announced several times that the head of Boko Haram was dead and every single time we find out that it is not true.

“What I read recently is that Shekau’s lookalike or some Shekau impostor was killed and then I read later that maybe Shekau himself was killed. I don’t put a lot of weight on those stories until we see more evidence”.

While many analysts have also dismissed the claim as propaganda, the state Department official noted that the sect was still carrying out attacks as if nothing of such happened.

Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the sect attacked two villages in Borno, (Shaffa and Shindiffu) killing a pastor, a teacher and 18 other villagers.
