Mercedes-Benz has revealed the AMG GT, a new sports car for its range that will be capable of 0-62mph in four seconds.
The GT is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by
Mercedes-AMG, which is a tune up to Mercedes-Benz. The first was the
Mercedes-AMG SLS.
The GT is a two-seater with a surprisingly
large 350-litre luggage compartment; the GT has an aluminium structure
and a four-litre twin turbo V8 petrol engine which drives the rear
wheels through a seven-speed twin-clutch semi-automatic gearbox. The
gearbox is mounted at the rear of the car, and the overall weight
distribution is 47% front and 53% rear.
In addition to the
extra power, the GT S has larger front brakes than the non-S, along with
wider tyres, three-stage suspension damping, an electronically
controlled rather than simply mechanical limited slip differential and
engine and suspension mounts that vary in firmness according to how the
car is being driven.
"With the new Mercedes-AMG GT, we are
venturing out into a challenging sports car segment with its top-class
competitive field. This is an incentive and motivation for us at the
same time to prove to sports car enthusiasts around the world the kind
of performance that AMG is capable of," said Prof Dr Thomas Weber,
Daimler management board member responsible for group research &
Mercedes-Benz Cars development.
Pricing will be announced in October.
