The World Health Organization said Thursday that 35 people have died from the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, out of the 62 people infected by the virus.
DR Congo is the fifth African country to be affected by the epidemic this year. Scientists however say that the infectious strain is different from the one present in West Africa where more than 2,200 people in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
The world’s first identified case of Ebola was in 1976 in DR Congo.
This year’s outbreak occurred in the northwest region, spreading to the four villages of Watsi Kengo, Lokolia, Boende and Boende Muke. The areas are now equipped with isolation units.
