Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko has described his reported plan to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as “a rumour.”
“I don’t want to react to that because it is a mere rumour,” he told journalists on Wednesday after the National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting of the Labour Party, LP, in Abuja.
While declaring the NEC meeting open earlier in the day, the National Chairman, Dan Nwanyanwu, discredited reports that Mimiko was planning to leave the party. In his words, the governor would not have attended the meeting if he had any plan to defect.
He said: “You have seen him (Mimiko) here. As I’m talking to you, he is still a bonafide member of the Labour Party. We don’t have to base everything on speculation. You can see that he is here and we have discussed everything concerning the Labour Party together. He is here live and direct.”
Nwanyanwu, who declared his intention to resign as national chairman of the party, stated that the party’s national convention would hold on October 4.
Govrnor Mimiko while speaking to journalists however said he would support the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 presidential election if the president decided to run.
Mimiko was reported two weeks ago to have concluded plans to decamp to the PDP.
