A 25-year-old woman in India gave birth to a baby girl against her husband’s “wish” and she paid dearly for it. Her husband locked her up in a bathroom for three years and banned her from seeing her child.

According to an International Business Times reports, the woman was rescued from her “prison”  after her father sought police help. The police broke into the bathroom in Darbhanga, east of Patna, where she was kept.

The woman, found with overgrown nails and tattered clothes, could not open her eyes in the sunlight. And she wept inconsolably when her daughter did not recognise her.

MailOnline reports that she had been tortured consistently since her wedding in 2010 for failing to bring enough dowry (money and gifts donated from the bride's family to the groom's). She was locked up when she gave birth to a girl.

Chief officer Seema Kumari said: “She was not allowed to see her child, and given leftover food irregularly. It was as if her in-laws were seeking revenge for not bringing ample dowry and for giving birth to a girl child.

“She was never allowed to go meet her parents. When her relatives visited Darbhanga to meet her, they were dissuaded or shooed away”.

Although dowry-giving had been outlawed in India since 1981, many still engage in the practice, a reason believed to be why many families prefer male children.

The victim's husband, Prabhat Kumar Singh, is currently in Police custody.

His parents Dhirendra Singh and Indra Devi will also face interrogation as the victim's family has launched a legal case against them.
