Daniel Crespo, the mayor of a California suburb in the United States has been shot dead by his wife during what police called a domestic dispute involving his wife and son on Tuesday.

Daniel Crespo
Crespo, 45, who is mayor of the Los Angeles-area city of Bell Gardens, was shot “multiple” times in the upper torso at home. He died a while later at a hospital.

NBC News reports that his wife, Lyvette Crespo, 43, was detained, questioned and later released without being charged.

After interviewing her, Sheriff's homicide detectives in a statement late Tuesday said: "The facts of the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office who will determine if criminal charges will be filed."

Police told NBC that the couple was arguing when their 19-year-old son, Daniel Jr., intervened. Investigators said Lyvette then grabbed a gun and shot her husband. Their son voluntarily surrendered to Bell Gardens police, sheriff's Lt. Steve Jauch said.

The deceased and his wife were high school sweethearts who got married in 1986 and moved to California from New York City.

Crespo worked as a Los Angeles County probation officer in addition to his duties as mayor.

He was elected to the City Council in 2001 and became mayor a year later. The position of mayor is rotated among council members.
