Amber Vinson, the second Texas nurse who was infected with the Ebola virus while caring for a Liberian patient in the US has been confirmed cured and has left hospital.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday after leaving hospital, she said: “I’m so grateful to be well and first and foremost I want to thank God,”
The 29-year-old nurse who could not help getting emotional and wiping off tears, thanked her family and the medical teams in Texas and Georgia, and asked for people to continue to work to eradicate the Ebola outbreak in other countries.
“While this is a day for celebration and gratitude, I ask that we not lose focus on the thousands of families that continue to labor under the burden of this disease in West Africa.” she said.
Her colleague Nina Pham, who was infected before her, was treated at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and was released on Friday.
They were both infected while caring for Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian who was diagnosed with Ebola in Texas after flying to the US from his native Liberia, He died on October 8.
