A riot broke out on Saturday at Igbotako, a town in Oktitpupa Local Government Area of Ondo State leading to the death of a 14-year-old boy and two others.

Punch reports that the police station in the town was vandalized and razed by an angry mob protesting the killing of the teenager and another person by a team of policemen from the Local Government.

The report said trouble started early in the day during the monthly nationwide environmental sanitation exercise. The chairman of the local government, Shola Piri, had reportedly led environmental officials to stop the market activities that were going on in the town while the sanitation was still on.

According to eyewitnesses, the people resisted prompting Piri to send for reinforcement from the police station.

The situation, it was learnt, degenerated into a free for all fight during which the police allegedly fired shots that killed two people, one of them being the 14-year-old lad.

The chairman and his officials were whisked away by police but youths mobilized and stormed the police station which they vandalized and set ablaze.

Sources said the protest continued for almost six hours leading to the death of three people and leaving several others injured. Soldiers were called in the put the situation under control.
