Three Boko Haram suspects were on Tuesday sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos. The convicts, Ali Mohammed, Adamu Karumi and Ibrahim Usman were sentenced for participating in acts of terrorism.
Justice Ibrahim Buba had on December 3 last year, granted an application moved by the Lagos State government seeking that the trial be conducted in secret to protect the witnesses. Journalists were therefore barred from covering the trial and the judgement.
The trio was among 17 suspects who were last year charged to court by the state. They were later reduced to four following the withdrawal of the case against 13 suspects. They were all initially arraigned on 18 counts charge of conspiracy to commit terrorism, illegal possession of firearms, and being members of a proscribed organisation.
The 4th suspect, Bala Haruna, was discharged by the court on the grounds that the government failed to prove the allegation of funding of terrorism activities levelled against him. He had been alleged to fund and facilitate the escape of the first convict, Ali Mohammed, from detention.
The suspects allegedly committed the offences on March 21 last year, at Plot 5, Road 69, Lekki Phase I Housing Estate, and at No. 24, Oyegbeni St., Ijora-Oloye, Apapa-Iganmu, Lagos.
They were alleged to have been in possession of three packets of explosive construction pipes, 15 detonators, and 11 AK47 rifles with 30 rounds of live ammunition.
Other items also alleged to have been found in their possession include 200 rounds of 7.6 mm live ammunition, two suit cases containing explosives, and a water container filled with explosives.
