Spanish nurse, Teresa Romero, who contracted Ebola while caring for two infected priests at a Madrid hospital has recovered and has been officially cleared of the disease after a second and conclusive test for the virus came out negative on Tuesday.

Speaking to a press conference, Doctor Jose Ramon Arribas, head of the Carlos III hospital’s infectious diseases unit in Madrid, said: “The criteria set by the World Health Organization for curing the Ebola virus have been fulfilled… She is now cured.”

Romero, 44, who became the first person to contract the virus outside West Africa after testing positive on October 6, was said to have been treated with plasma gotten from a recovered Ebola patient. No further treatment details were given.

Romero would however remain at the hospital for another two weeks.

Even though she is the only known sufferer of Ebola in Spain, 15 other people in hospital, including Romero’s husband, are under observation for signs of the disease.

Romero’s pet dog, Excalibur, has been killed by health authorities that the pet could harbor the virus and spread it somehow. Animal rights activists could not stop the killing despite international outcry on social media
