He picked up the ladies across the country, staying and eating in their homes whenever he was nearby and borrowing money from them which he never returned. He vanished whenever a woman became too demanding, either for his time or for her money back. He would claim that the money was for business to help his family in Gambia.
Police has discovered four children from different women belonging to him. Two of his girlfriends are also pregnant for him.
Two of his wives who realized they had been married to the same man without their knowledge had reported to the police who then set a honey trap for him at Vienna Airport.
Police arranged the honey trap with the cooperation of a young woman he had been communicating with on Facebook to persuade her to lend him more money.
How did the bubble burst? He met a lady, Sonja Maier, in a bar and she fell in love with him. They got married a month later and after a year of marriage when Maier was already pregnant, she saw on Facebook a woman’s picture with someone who looked like her husband with the same surname.
Maier then got in touch with the woman and soon they realised that when he was with one of them, he was never with the other. When they both confronted him, he disappeared and they reported him to the police.
Investigations then led to the revelation that he kept about 16 different women all of whom believed they were in an exclusive relationship or marriage with him. He had then across the length and breadth of the country. The 16 excludes those he had used and dumped.
Detective Patrick Maierhofer, was quoted as saying: “He always used the same tactics. He would look at women in bars and was always charming and attentive.
“He would also fascinate them with fanciful stories about his homeland in Africa and how he had fled horrific wars leaving his family behind - and later he would ask for financial assistance for them”
According to Vienna police spokesman, Thomas Keiblinger, “he went under various names and we have released his picture at some of his names in the hope that we can contact other victims.
Some of his names included: Sonko Tijan, Bojang Tijan and Crang Junior.
Tijan has also been accused of using his women, children and fake names and photos of friends to claim thousands from Austrian social services.
But Tijan has denied the allegation of serial bigamy. His lawyer, Nicholas Rast told The Standard in an interview that Tijan told he was only involved in three affairs at the time, including the one with his girlfriend who is pregnant and an ex with whom he has one child.

“He came to me in 2005, after he had come alone from The Gambia to Austria. We have applied for asylum. It was for political persecution that rebels tried to kill him. [Now detained] in prison, you know you can talk there only through a glass pane. Of course Tijan is not in a good state. When I first heard about the news, I thought to myself, wow! But it appeared to me a bit much. Fifteen women! I asked him of course. Tijan says he has three relationships simultaneously. I think that is already a good performance! A girlfriend is pregnant. And there is an ex. A woman with whom he has one child. That's it. About a wife in The Gambia, this is false information…
“About the women mentioned, it is quite possible that they thought he wanted to marry her. It is simply selective perception. One imagines something that the other has never said that. I'm divorced twice. Love can quickly turn to hate. Tijan does not fit into the scheme of a marriage swindle. He's just a fun-loving, cheerful, funny young man. One of the flying hearts. He denies all the women knew him by name… And you know asylum seekers always have aliases. I have represented a 'Sylvester Stallone', 'Prince Charles' and 'Mickey Mouse'.
