The captain and goalkeeper of South Africa's national football team, Senzo Meyiwa, has been shot dead in his home. Police, in a tweet, said armed men invaded his home in Vosloorus near Johannesburg at about 8pm on Sunday.

Police said the assailants, three of them, fled after the shooting. Cops added that the shooting happened after an altercation and that there were seven people in the house as at the time of the attack.

Authorities have said that they would do all they can to find the killers and have offered a $14,000 reward for anyone with information that would lead to their arrest.

But it remains unclear if the attack was an armed robbery or an assassination.

In a statement, Meyiwa’s club, Orlando Pirates, said it "has learned with sadness about the untimely death of our number one goalkeeper and current captain Senzo Meyiwa."

The club’s chairman, Irvin Khoza said: "This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it -- to Senzo's family, his extended family, Orlando Pirates and to the nation.

Twenty-seven year old Meyiwa has been South Africa's captain in all the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifiers played so far. He was in goal for Orlando Pirates on Saturday in a 4-1 win over Ajax Cape Town.

This is the second loss to South African sports as the country lost a former 800-meter world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi in a car crash on Friday.
