Senzo Meyiwa, captain and goalkeeper of South Africa's national football team, Bafana Bafana was shot dead last night at his girlfriend's house. He was shot while trying to protect his girlfriend from robbers who invaded her house.
Evening standard reports that two gunmen the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend, actress and singer, Kelly Khumalo, while one waited outside.
A provincial official for community safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malubane, was quoted as saying that: “Two guys entered the house and demanded cellphones, money and other valuables.
"Senzo tried to protect Kelly because one of the men had a gun pointed towards her."
Police are on the trail of the gunmen and a reward of $14,000 has been offered to anyone with information that would lead to the arrest of the killers.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the death of the 27-year-old goalkeeper. Many are offering their condolences o tweeter.
Dean Furman, one of Meyiwa's teammates, tweeted: "Beyond devastated at the loss of our captain & friend Senzo Meyiwa. Thoughts & prayers are with his family & friends at this terrible time."
South African cricketer Vernon Philander tweeted: "My thoughts and prayers goes out the family of Senzo Meyiwa. May you find the comfort in the Lord during this difficult time. RIP."
Former Tottenham and Portsmouth midfielder and Ghana international Kevin Prince Boateng tweeted: "TRAGEDY!!!! R.I.P. Senzo Meyiwa. My condolences to his family&friends."
Twenty-seven year old Meyiwa has been South Africa's captain in all the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifiers played so far. He was in goal for Orlando Pirates on Saturday in a 4-1 win over Ajax Cape Town.
