The Senator representing Borno Central at the National Assembly, Ahmed Zannah, has accused the Nigerian military of lying to the public about the situation in Bama, Borno State.

The Military yesterday claimed that it had successfully repelled the Boko Haram insurgents in their attempt to capture Bama, which is 78 kilometres from Maiduguri. The military said it was in full control of the town but a section of the media reported that Boko Haram had actually conquered Bama.

He challenged both the Borno state government and military authority to take the media to Bama to verify their claims that Boko Haram had not captured the town.

The senator, who is an indigene of Bama, in a telephone chat with THISDAY Live on Wednesday said: "As I am speaking to you Bama has been captured and the insurgents on the prowling for any male, killing at will". Everyone is a target as long as you are male but for now women and children are being sparred".

Zannah, an indigene of said he lost two nephews to the insurgents who according to him captured Bama on Tuesday.

His words:"They entered my brother's house in Bama and shot his two sons they met at the residence."

He also said: "Both the military and Borno state government are lying to Nigerians, and to prove that I am the one misinforming the public they should take journalists to the town to cross check the fact".

Zannah had on Tuesday morning granted an interview in which he said that Bama has been captured by Boko Haram but the youth vigilante group swiftly came out to rebuke him, describing his claim as politically motivated.
