Two soldiers were crushed to death on Thursday evening by a petrol tanker at a check-point at Leru junction, on Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway in Umunnechi Local Government Area of Abia State, Vanguard reports.
The driver of the tanker loaded with petrol was also said to have been burnt to death when the tanker caught fire in the accident. The fire also injured many others around.
According to reports, the trailer was coming from Okigwe end on high speed to Enugu and on approaching the Army check-point at Leru junction applied brake but the brake failed and it ran into the soldiers at the check-point and other vehicles.
Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji has condoled with the Army authorities over the death of the two soldiers, describing their death as most painful.
Governor Orji advised motorists plying the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway to desist from over speeding and to slow down at road blocks to avoid accidents.
