Today, December 8, the die is cast in Enugu State. The Peoples Democratic Party would select its governorship candidate ahead of the 2015 general elections. Stakeholders have asked delegates who would do the selection to act in the interest of the state. One of the major stakeholders are the youths who eight months ago, broke party barriers and came under one umbrella – The Enugu State Youth Agenda (EYA), which has proven to be a veritable platform for youths of the state to air their minds about the candidates.

L-R, Oyo State chapter coordinator of Enugu State Youth Agenda, Engr. Chuka Alumona, Director General of the Agenda, Comrade Temple Chika, Mr Ejikeme Okpe and Deputy Director General, Hon Emeka Okoro  at the inauguration of the Oyo State Chapter of the Enugu State Youth Agenda in Diaspora lbadan  chapter

In an impressive manner, the Agenda gathered the youths on the platform across Nigeria and assessed all the candidates vying to be governor of the state. That they did, after removing every political party toga on the candidates and then lumping them together for assessment. In the end, they singled out one man, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the lawmaker currently representing Igboeze North\Udenu Federal Constituency.

The Agenda, led by Comrade Temple Chinedu Chika, maintained that Ugwuanyi represents the teeming youth population  in the state just as he stands for a passionate course to place Enugu State atop the league of states in Nigeria.

They re-echoed the decision on Sunday while launching the Oyo State chapter of the Agenda at the D’Rovans Hotel, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Comrade Chika, inaugurating the Oyo State executives led by Engr. Chuka Alumona, said that the essence of rallying Enugu youths in diaspora is to make them part of that one voice and ensure that they play a role for the development of their home state.

Before the inauguration too, the youths in Oyo had met and agreed to lend their voice to the state’s affairs as it concerned who governed it as from May 29 next year.

The coordinator, Alumona, said:

“This body is a non-partisan body but whenever we want to go for a candidate we assess with all our minds towards pushing that person forward irrespective of the party. This time around we have agreed to push Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of he PDP forward because he is the right person that we know can move the ship of Enugu state forward. Hence, we are openly adopting him.

In taking the decision to adopt Ugwuanyi, how is the party going to cope with dissenting voices?

The Director-General, Chika answers:

“In the agenda we have members of PDP, APC, APGA and several other parties but they were all part of the decision. I can not tell you that there are no dissenting voices initially but we were able to harmonise. And they understood and saw the reason why we should take that bold step”.
So, the Enugu State Youth Agenda has now come to stay and the youths of the state have been urged to take up the gauntlet and help the state move forward.
