The Chairman of Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State Mr. Bonaventure Onuh, has been impeached over an alleged N1.75billion budget scam.
He was removed on Monday by 19 out of the 20 councillors in the council, after the adoption of a report submitted by a five man panel that investigated the allegations against him.
The councillors had accused Onuh of misappropriating over N1.75
billion being part of the amount budgeted by the council for this year’s
appropriation. They said he retired all the funds without executing any
of the projects the money was meant for.
Hon. Onyekachi Fidelis Itodo emerged acting chairman.
A resolution by the councilors also mandated the impeached chairman to hand all the council’s property in his possession over to the acting chairman, while the clerk of the House was directed to notify all relevant security agencies of the development.
Daily Post reports that according to the panel, Onuh failed to address the budget scam allegations, prompting his indictment alongside some principal officers of the council. The panel had recommended that he and the vice chairman be impeached.
It is believed that Onuh is a staunch ally of Senator Ayogu Eze, who is laying claim to the PDP governorship ticket, citing a parallel guber primary he led.
