Chief M. K. O Abiola’s wife, Chief  Mrs Dupe Onitiri-Abiola, on Thursday, emerged the Lagos State governorship candidate for the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) ahead of the 2015 general elections. She will now lock horns with contestants like APC’s Akinwunmi Ambode, PDP’s Jimi Agbaje and others, for the soul of Lagos State come February next year.

She won the ticket as a consensus candidate at the party’s congress/primary held at the party secretariat, Unity Road, Ikeja, Lagos.

In her acceptance speech, Abiola stated that she was poised to become the first female governor of the state.

She stressed that the country’s democracy was won by the blood of her husband and other democrats killed during the June 12 1993 struggle. She said she is poised to sustain her husband’s legacy.

Chief M.K.O won the 1993 election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in what has been adjudged Nigeria’s freest and fairest election. The election was however annulled by the then Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, for reasons best known to him.

UPN was founded by the late Obafemi Awolowo and resuscitated by Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) leader, Dr. Fredrick Fasheun.
