A wife and a son of the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL,
formerly ISIS), Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has been detained by the Lebanese army as
they crossed from Syria. Security officials said the wife was a Syrian national.
The army said they were detained 10 days ago and have been questioned at the
ministry of defence.
According to the Lebanese newspaper, As-Safir, she was detained in coordination
with “foreign intelligence apparatus” having been found to be travelling with a
fake passport in company of her son.
The ISIL militants have seized wide areas of Iraq and Syria, and declared a
caliphate over the seized territories.
Forces of Syria’s neighbor to the east, Lebanon, have waged an onslaught on
ISIL sympathisers in their country and the intelligence services have been
extra vigilant on the border crossings.
They have arrested over the past few months a number of ISIL fighters
suspected of staging attacks to expand ISIL influence in Lebanon.
