Citizens of North Korea have been banned from sharing their names with the country’s Prime Minister, Kim Jong-un.

The new decree directs parents to desist from naming their babies “Kim”. All those already bearing the name have been asked to go and “voluntarily change their names and make changes to official documents such as identity cards and educational qualifications.

Authorities have also been ordered to reject any birth certificates belonging to babies sharing the 31-year old leader's name.

Citizens have also been reportedly banned from sharing the names of Kim's predecessors Kim Il-sung and his son Kim Jong-il.

According to the document, "Authorities should make sure that there is no one making unnecessary complaints or spreading gossip... regarding this project."

The punishment for defying the directive was not stated but who would dare the Kim Jong-un?
Questions have been raised over the health of the leader who is overweight and rumoured to be suffering with gout and a hip joint problem. The new law is believed to be part of an effort to create a cult of personality around Kim Jong-un.

Kim Jong-un assumed office in 2011 following the death of his father, Kim Jong-il.
